Claude vs ChatGPT
Writing Quality
Claude is widely regarded as producing more natural, nuanced prose. Its instruction following is precise, and it rarely adds generic filler. ChatGPT/GPT-4o is also excellent but tends toward slightly more formulaic structure in long-form content.
Coding
Claude 3.7 Sonnet leads the SWE-bench software engineering benchmark at 70.3%, above GPT-4o. Claude Code (CLI) enables autonomous coding tasks. ChatGPT has a larger ecosystem of coding plugins.
Reasoning
Both support extended thinking/chain-of-thought. Claude's extended thinking mode shows its reasoning transparently. OpenAI's o3 model is optimized for pure reasoning tasks at a higher cost.
Context Window
Claude Enterprise offers a 500K token context window. ChatGPT offers 128K. For document analysis tasks, Claude has a structural advantage.
Safety and Refusals
Claude is more conservative by default and may decline edge-case requests that ChatGPT handles. This is a trade-off: safer but occasionally more frustrating for legitimate tasks.
Pricing
Both offer free tiers. Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are each $20/month. ChatGPT Pro at $200/month includes o3 and more compute. Claude API is slightly cheaper per token for most workloads.
Integrations
ChatGPT has more third-party plugin integrations and a larger app ecosystem. Claude integrates natively with Slack, Notion, and major enterprise tools.
